Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has announced that her party will be holding a series of public rallies in the coming weeks.

The announcement comes as the party plans to increase its engagements with potential coalition partners with a view to forming a government.

In a statement issued on Saturday, McDonald said: “Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael’s plan to carve-up political power and to block change is a rejection of what people voted for.

“Over the coming fortnight, Sinn Féin will host the first of a series of public rallies to bring the conversation about a Government for Change to the people. This will include events in Cork, Dublin, Newry, Cavan and Galway.

“I look forward to these events and to engaging with those who want real change over the coming period.”

The statement specifies that Sinn Féin will meet with the Green Party on Monday and other Independents later in the week.

McDonald was nominated for Taoiseach during the first sitting of the 33rd Dáil, but fell some way short of the majority needed to be confirmed – securing 45 votes.

The rallies will take place between 24 February and 6 March, with the Dublin rally being held at Liberty Hall.
