Sinn Féin to try to force general election with motion of no confidence next week

Carl Kinsella

Sinn Féin are said to be planning to put forth a no confidence motion in the government over the recent revelations pertaining to the Garda whistleblower scandal.

False allegations surrounding Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe have come to light in the past week, raising questions over ethics in the behaviour of Government ministers as well as state bodies as the Gardaí and Tusla.

Specifically, it has emerged that Minister for Children Katherine Zappone was aware of the false sex crime allegations in Tusla’s database. According to the Irish Times, both the Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald have since sought to distance themselves from the Independent cabinet minister.

Sinn Féin will use the apparent mishandling of the affair to bring down the government through a vote of no confidence in the coming week.

Upon establishing a government after the 2016 general election, Fianna Fáil agreed to side with the government in motions of no confidence. The two parties have 94 seats between them, which is more than enough votes for them to avoid defeat in such a motion.
