Sinn Féin will call for a referendum on Irish reunification if Britain leaves EU

Carl Kinsella

If the UK decide to leave the EU on June 23 that might not be the only exit they face.

Britons and residents of Britain will head to the polls a few weeks from now to decide the future of their country with regards to its EU membership – a decision that will have many far-reaching consequences, not least for Ireland.

Speaking after the Scottish National Party confirmed that a vote to leave the EU would trigger a second referendum on Scottish independence, Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy said that a Brexit would create the ‘democratic imperative’ for a referendum on the return of the six counties to the Republic.

Speaking at a conference in County Antrim, Carthy said “The only type of united Ireland that interests me in is one that is agreed, inclusive, pluralist and which is constructed by all our citizens, from whatever background or tradition.”

Carthy further conceded that for Ireland to be reunified, there would need to be support for a significant subsection of unionists, according to anphoblacht.

Carthy’s comments reflect those made by prominent Sinn Féin member Martin McGuinness two months ago.
