Six people dead after huge sinkhole in China swallows bus and pedestrians
The incident happened on Monday evening.
At least six people have been killed and 16 more have been injured after a sinkhole swallowed a bus picking up passengers in northwestern China.
The bus had just stopped outside a hospital in Xining, the capital of Qinghai province when the incident occurred.
Footage captured at the scene shows people running from the collapsing road. Others attempt to help those trapped before being engulfed as by the sinkhole when it suddenly widens.
Shortly after the bus sinks into the hole, an explosion can be seen on the footage.
Six people were confirmed to have died and 16 others are being treated in hospital, the Xining municipal government said at a news conference on Tuesday morning.
A search and rescue operation involving more than 1,000 people and 30 vehicles was carried out.

An investigation to discover the cause of the sinkhole is also underway.
Sinkholes are relatively common in China and are blamed on construction works and rapid expansion in some areas.
In 2013, five people were killed when a 10-metre-wide sinkhole opened up at the gates of an industrial estate in Shenzhen.
