Three men charged in connection with aggravated burglary in Sligo

Three men have been charged in connection with an aggravated burglary in Sligo which left the victim in a critical condition.

At around 7pm on Tuesday, 18 January, three masked men forced their way into a private house on the N59 in Skreen.

The sole resident of the house, 73-year-old Tom Niland, was at home watching TV.

Tom answered a knock at his front door and was immediately and viciously assaulted and a small sum of money was stolen.

The culprits left Tom with serious head and upper body injuries and the 73-year-old remains in critical condition and on life support.

The men, one aged in their 50s, one in their 30s and one in their 20s were detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at separate Garda stations in the Sligo and Leitrim Division.

The men will sit before a special sitting of Sligo District Court at 8pm on Thursday (10 March).
