Snapchat is being sued for featuring explicit content

Carl Kinsella

Wait a minute… Isn’t that the whole point of Snapchat?

Just kidding, we know that Snapchat is about far more than just sending nudes. It’s also about filters that make you look like your face is stuck in a slice of bread, and swapping your visage with everything around you that kind of looks like a face.

Many Snapchat users, however, tend to overlook the Discover function – which is now at the centre of a class action lawsuit led by a 14-year-old John Doe from California.

The lawsuit reads: “Millions of parents in the United States today are unaware that Snapchat is curating and publishing this profoundly sexual and offensive content to their children”.

The Discover channels, which belong to big companies like MTV, Buzzfeed and Sky Sports, are editorially independent on the app itself – an argument that Snapchat have made in response to the suit.

The lawyers for the case have claimed that Snapchat exercise a high degree of curation over the content, and as such are making the choice not to moderate it. According to Mashable, it is not known how many people are involved in the class action lawsuit but they are apparently looking for €45,000 per violation.
