Some Cork bus routes to see price decrease

The implementation of this new measurement starts today, Monday, 20 July, and will be applied to all of Bus Éireann’s TFI city bus services in Cork.

This new fare allows passengers to make unlimited transfers within a 90-minute period, only by tapping their Leap Card's new on-board ticket validators when boarding.

​With more than 5,000 passengers every week already making journeys involving more than one bus, this new design aims to speed up boarding times by making travelling around the city easier and cheaper for people getting multiple buses on one journey, according to the National Transport Authority (NTA).

The changes affect several Leap Card types. Adult Leap card users' previous fares of €1.35 and €1.55 will be replaced by a single €1.70 flat fare for 90 minutes of travel.

The NTA says this particularly benefits passengers who previously paid €2.70 when travelling between buses. Now they will only be paying  €1.70 using a Leap Card for a single journey.

Young Adult and Student Leap Card users will be paying 85c, and the fee for Child Leap Card users has been reduced from 65c to 55c.

As for Free Travel Pass holders, they will continue to travel for free, but now they must tap their card when getting on the bus.

Children aged eight or under will continue to travel free.

However, the new fare won’t apply to passengers paying by cash, with an adult cash fare of €2.40 and a child cash fare reduced to 80c.

Anne Shaw, Chief Executive of the National Transport Authority, said:  “This new initiative for Cork means passengers can move around the bus network much more flexibly – and not be penalised for doing so.”
