May he rest in peace…

Sports commentator and journalist Jimmy Magee has sadly passed away at the age of 82.

Magee will be remembered as a true great of Irish sports broadcasting for his work on various sports over the years.

Affectionately known as The Memory Man, he had been ill for some time prior to his death.

He was born in New York in 1935, but he and his three siblings grew up in Cooley in County Louth.

In a career which spanned 60 years, he commentated on 11 Olympic Games and 12 World Cups from 1966 all the way up until 2010. He also covered boxing and Gaelic games.

Speaking on Newstalk on Wednesday morning John Giles paid tribute to the veteran broadcaster

“Jimmy was interested in all sports, he had a great love for it. He was always great company,” Giles said.

“Jimmy knew all the facts and figures and had a genuine interest in football. He actually loved the game and that came across in Jimmy’s commentary.”
