Status Orange rain warning Ireland

Be careful out there.

Wednesday (9 March) is proving especially wet.

To that end, Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange weather warning for five counties, with continuing heavy falls of rain expected as the day progresses.

The counties in question are Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow and Waterford.

According to the national forecaster, heavy rain will remain persistent, leading to surface flooding and poor driving conditions.

The warning is valid from now until 9pm on Wednesday evening.

It follows on from a previously issued Status Yellow warning concerning low temperatures and ice, with 24 counties affected.

Met Éireann says to expect hazardous conditions due to a widespread “severe” frost that will result in ice on untreated surfaces.

The warning is valid from 8pm on Wednesday evening (9 March) and will remain in place until 10am on Thursday morning.

The affected counties are Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, Wicklow, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Galway and Roscommon.

Beyond the warnings, Wednesday should be largely dry and clear, according to the national forecaster.

However, eastern fringes will see lingering cloud and outbreaks of rain.

Some areas could see patches of sleet and snow, though these accumulations should be small enough.

Lowest temperatures of -3 to +3 degrees are anticipated, alongside the aforementioned hazardous conditions associated with the incoming Status Yellow warning.

Pockets of dense and/or freezing fog will also occur.

As for Thursday, the frost, ice and fog should clear in the morning, leading to a largely dry and bright affair with some sunny spells for company.

That said, cloud will move in from the Atlantic through the afternoon and evening, with patchy drizzle at times.

Highest daytime temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees are forecast.
