Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning issued for 24 counties

Hazardous conditions are expected.

‘Tis cold.

So cold, in fact, that Met Éireann has issued a brand new weather warning.

24 counties in total are affected – Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, Wicklow, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Galway and Roscommon.

Most places across the country, basically.

Met Éireann says to expect hazardous conditions due to a widespread “severe” frost that will result in ice on untreated surfaces.

The warning is valid from 8pm on Wednesday evening (9 March) and will remain in place until 10am on Thursday morning.

At the time of writing on Wednesday afternoon, a separate Status Yellow warning is in place for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford.

Heavy falls of rain in the form of sleet or snow has been forecast, and reports of snow have indeed emerged since the warning came into effect overnight.

Localised flooding remains a risk, as do poor driving conditions.

This warning is set to expire at 7pm on Wednesday.

Beyond the warnings, Wednesday should be largely dry and clear, according to the national forecaster.

However, eastern fringes will see lingering cloud and outbreaks of rain.

Some areas could see patches of sleet and snow, though these accumulations should be small enough.

Lowest temperatures of -3 to +3 degrees are anticipated, alongside the aforementioned hazardous conditions associated with the incoming Status Yellow warning.

Pockets of dense and/or freezing fog will also occur.

As for Thursday, the frost, ice and fog should clear in the morning, leading to a largely dry and bright affair with some sunny spells for company.

That said, cloud will move in from the Atlantic through the afternoon and evening, with patchy drizzle at times.

Highest daytime temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees are forecast.
