Met Éireann name storm set to batter Ireland this weekend

Just when you thought the weather couldn’t get any worse.

Met Éireann has given the name Bert to the storm set to batter Ireland this weekend.

This week has already seen temperatures dip below zero, as well as “significant snowfall” in certain areas – both of which have caused travel disruptions.

That said, conditions aren’t going to get much better over the weekend.

There had been rumblings that there would be stormy weather on Friday night and Saturday night, with weather expert Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather telling his followers earlier this week:

“Friday night, a big change. So, we now have fairly good agreement on much milder but stormy weather moving in on Friday night into Saturday morning, with that storm bringing some strong winds and very heavy rain early on Saturday morning,” he said in a video.

“It looks like the worst of the storm will stay out in the Atlantic and its system will fill or weaken a little bit but then come back in across Ireland.

“So it is a very interesting few days of weather.”

This seems like it is coming to pass, with Met Éireann confirming in a weather advisory that Storm Bert will move close to Ireland, displacing the recent cold Arctic airmass.

“Very strong winds and heavy rain will track northeastwards over the country on Friday night with warnings already in places,” it said.

“Storm Bert will continue to dominate our weather through the weekend and into early next week and further warnings will be issued for this event.”

A Status Yellow wind and rain warning for Ireland has also been issued for the entire Republic of Ireland.

Valid from 10pm on Friday to midday on Saturday, it reads:

“Storm Bert: Very strong southeast to south winds coupled with heavy rain.

“Possible impacts: Localised flooding, travel disruption [and] fallen trees.”

The UK Met Office has also issued Yellow warnings for Northern Ireland over Storm Bert.
