It looks like Ireland will be bringing in the new year with severe weather and potential flooding.

As we reported earlier, there have been some back and forth warnings over the impending weather, with some counties told to prepare for some severe wind and rain, only for it all to be taken back, and only Donegal would still be under an orange weather-warning, but even that was lifted by 9am this morning.

However, with a level of uncertainty as to just how powerful the storm is actually going to be when it arrives, Limerick Council have cancelled their NYE celebrations that were due to take place later tonight.

Caroline Curley, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Service, Regional Services with Limerick City and County Council, made a statement on the Limerick Council website:

“It is with great regret that this decision has been taken, but in the interests of information from the event’s safety officer, the impact of the weather on the installation and rigging of the event and the safety of the tens of thousands of people expected to come out for the New Year’s Eve Extravaganza, it was decided to postpone the entire event.”

The celebrations, which were planned to be centred around King John’s Castle, have now been postponed to take place during 2018’s Saint Patrick’s Festival instead.

If you are unsure if your local NYE celebrations are going ahead, before heading out be sure to check ahead with their Twitter/FB feed, or ring directly.
