What the hell?

An Australian strawberry brand has been pulled from shelves in New Zealand after needles were found in a packet sold in a supermarket.

Countdown Supermarket said that the brand had been removed from their stores and encouraged the public to return them to their stores for a full refund.

“Customers can return any [Australian] Choice brand of strawberries they may have at home to Countdown for peace of mind and a full refund,” the supermarket said in a statement.

“Countdown is in contact with both New Zealand and Australian authorities as they investigate this matter.”

They also advised people to cut up any Australian strawberries before eating them.

The first report of needles in fruit in Australia was a week ago when a needle was found in a punnet of strawberries bought in Queensland.

There have been over 100 reports of needles being found in supermarket fruit since, although some of these are thought to be copycat cases or social media stunts.

Last week, the Australian government raised the maximum prison sentence for fruit tampering to 15 years, and there is a reward of A$100,000 for anyone with information.
