The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon.

Two people have been killed following a shooting in the eastern German city of Halle.

Local media has reported that the shooting took place near a synagogue on Wednesday.

The assailants fled the scene, but German police have arrested at least one individual in connection with the incident.

“Our forces have arrested one person,” noted the Halle police department on Twitter.

“Still, stay alert,” it advised.

“We are strong in and around Halle at present and stabilising the situation until we have the relevant information.”

According to the Associated Press, several shots were fired and the suspected assailants left the scene in a car.

Residents in the 240,000-population city have been urged to stay indoors, while the local railway station has been shut down as a precautionary measure.
