The woman is believed to be a former member of the Irish Defence Forces.

A woman, believed to be a former member of the Irish Defence Forces, has been detained in northern Syria.

Sources have linked the unidentified woman to the Islamic State terror group.

RTÉ reports that the woman previously held the rank of private before leaving the Defence Forces around eight years ago.

Speaking to JOE, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said that they are aware of an Irish woman who left Ireland three or four years ago who subsequently became radicalised.

They note that the woman was previously a member of the Irish Defence Forces, but that they are not aware of any person being held in custody.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFA) confirmed its knowledge of the situation.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of reports of an Irish citizen detained in northern Syria,” a DFA spokesperson told JOE.

“Appropriate consular assistance is provided to all Irish citizens where it is possible to do so,” they added.

It is understood that the relevant authorities are working in order to confirm the woman’s identity.

JOE has reached out to the Defence Forces for comment.
