The alleged incident has been widely condemned.

Gardaí have said that they are investigating claims from two TDs that bags of excrement were thrown at them.

In a post on Twitter on Wednesday evening, Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East Anne Rabbitte wrote: “Attended a meeting tonight and a bag of s**t was thrown at me and my government colleague!”

Later in the evening, Fine Gael TD for Galway East Ciarán Cannon shared Rabbitte’s tweet, confirming he was the government colleague to which she was referring.

Providing more details on the alleged incident, Cannon said: “So an idiot goes to the bother of putting excrement (human or animal, yet unknown) into two bags and throws one at me and one at Anne.

“All part of the job you might say, but I can understand why fewer people want this job.”

In a statement to JOE, a Garda spokesperson confirmed that the TDs’ claims are being investigated.

“An Garda Síochána are investigating all the circumstances relating to an incident that occurred at a public meeting in Gort this evening, Wednesday 4 January, 2023,” they said.

The alleged incident has been widely condemned, with many leaving messages of support for Cannon and Rabbitte under their Twitter posts.

Cannon later tweeted: “I love my job. It’s an extraordinary privilege to be chosen as a trusted representative of the people I meet everyday, the people who shape the future of our local communities and our country.

“Just needed to say that. Night all, thanks for your kind words.”
