Teenage pedestrian killed in Mayo road traffic collision

A male teenage pedestrian has been killed in a road traffic collision in Co. Mayo

The incident occurred shortly after 9pm on Saturday, March 30, on the N17, close to Claremorris, only a few kilometres from the site of the fatal crash where a mother and her two daughters lost their lives last week.

The teenager, believed to be 17, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Mayo University Hospital for a post-mortem.

The road where the incident took place is closed for examination and diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.

In a statement to JOE on Sunday morning, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: “Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal road traffic collision on the N17 at Barnacarroll, Claremorris, Co. Mayo, yesterday evening, Saturday 30th March 2024.

“The collision occurred at approximately 9:20pm and involved a car and a pedestrian.

“The pedestrian, a male aged in his teens, was pronounced deceased at the scene.  His body has been removed to Mayo University Hospital where a post mortem will take place.

“No other injuries have been reported.

“The road is currently closed for examination by forensic collision investigators.  Local diversions are in place.

“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam), and were travelling on the N17 between Claremorris and Knock yesterday evening between 8:45pm and 9:30pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Claremorris Garda Station on 094 937 2080, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
