Teenager drowns off the coast of Arranmore Island, Donegal

The incident happened shortly after 2pm yesterday.

An 18-year-old male has passed away while swimming off Arranmore Island in Co. Donegal.

The incident happened shortly after 2pm yesterday, when the teenager was in the sea with a friend.

He subsequently got into difficulty, and the Arranmore lifeboat was launched once the alarm was raised.

Breaking News reports that the young man is a Leaving Cert student at a local school.

His body will be taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

A Gardaí statement read: “Gardaí and local emergency services responded to an incident earlier this afternoon, 3rd January 2021, on Arranmore Island, Co Donegal.

“A man, aged in his late teens, was removed from water after he had gotten into difficulty.

“He received treatment from medics at the scene, but was later pronounced dead.

“The body of the man will be taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where a post-mortem will take place at a later date.”
