A property owner in Temple Bar, Dublin, must apply for planning permission to continue to let out rooms on Airbnb. An Bord Pleanála has upheld a ruling that a property on Crown Alley in the centre of Dublin's most popular tourist area must get planning permission to keep acting an an Airbnb. Local residents had complained to Dublin City Council, complaining that it was a change of use for the property and therefore needed planning permission. The residents had cited the coming and going of people and the disruption that was causing, such as security concerns. However, concerns that other property owners who use Airbnb may be affected have been allayed by a statement from An Bord Pleanála. “The declaration is site specific and relates to this particular instance in which it was assessed that continuing short- term letting was contrary to the original planning permission. It cannot be extrapolated that this is determining policy in relation to Airbnb throughout the city,” the council said. According to 98fm, the apartment has been rented out almost continuously for a year and has brought in almost €79,000 for its owners. Head of the Temple Bar Residents Association Frank McDonald said: "At a time when the city authorities are going to have to spend over €40,000,000 this year accommodating homeless families in hotels, I think it's incumbent on the council to deal with this matter."
