Carl Kinsella

The average age of grooms in Ireland hit an all time high last year, according to new statistics released by the Central Statistics Office.

According to the CSO, the average age at which a man took his vows last year was 35.3 – up from 35.0 the previous year.

While women tend to be a little bit younger at the time they say I do, it’s not all that much younger, with the average being 33.2. Again, this was a small increase on the previous year’s 33.0. This is also the highest age to date.

It was also revealed that Ireland has one of the higher annual rates of marriage in the EU, coming 8th behind Lithuania, Cyprus, Malta, Latvia, Romania, Sweden and Denmark.

Catholic marriage ceremony rates are also falling, with 57.8% Catholic marriages last year. Civil marriage ceremonies are a popular non-religious option, with over 28% of people opting for a civil service instead.
