The average cost of a wedding in the UK is far cheaper than it is in Ireland

Conor Heneghan

You could nearly have two weddings there for the price of one here.

A survey by Ocean Finance has revealed that the average cost of a wedding in the UK is approximately £8,000 (approximately €10,400), which, as you might suspect, falls way short of the cost of a wedding on this side of the pond.

Of the 2,000+ newlyweds in the UK who took part in the survey, 44% said that they spent between £100 and £5,000 (approximately €130 – €6,500) on their big day.

27% said they spent between £5,000 and £10,000 (€6,500 – €13,000), 12% forked out between £10,000 and £15,000 (€13,000 – €19,500), with just 17% spending in excess of £15,000 (€19,500).

Those figures are in stark contrast to a survey conducted by weddingsonline earlier this year, which revealed that the average cost of an Irish wedding was €22,531.

The figure for Irish weddings did include the cost of a honeymoon, but even still, that represents a gap of over €10,000 between the cost of an average wedding in Ireland and the UK.

Just over half of those surveyed (52%) in the UK were able to finance the wedding with money they had saved up, 34% relied on financial support from friends and family, with just 6% taking out a loan to finance the big day.

As if anyone needed a reminder, weddings in Ireland are an expensive business.

But all worth it, right?
