The case of notorious murder suspect Robert Durst has taken an interesting turn

Tony Cuddihy

Robert Durst, the multi-millionaire subject of the brilliant HBO documentary The Jinx, looks likely to face charges for the 2000 murder of his friend Susan Berman.

The New York property heir, whose family own some of Manhattan’s most lucrative buildings, pled guilty to a weapons charge and agreed to an 85-month prison sentence in New Orleans, opening up the possibility of being extradited to California on murder charges.

Durst is suspected of killing Berman to stop her from revealing details about the disappearance of his wife Kathleen in 1982.

The weapons charge stems from last year, when Durst was arrested on the eve of the broadcast of the final episode of The Jinx. He was found in a hotel in New Orleans with a weapon and $117,000 in cash.

As well as the weapons charge, Durst was charged with the murder of Berman in 2000.

If U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt accepts his current plea, he is then expected to be arraigned in Los Angeles by the middle of August and face trial for killing Berman.

“This agreement has a lot of moving parts and a lot of jurisdictions. What we’re doing and have been trying to do from the start is get Bob Durst to Los Angeles,” defense attorney Dick DeGuerin said after the hearing. “Bob Durst did not kill Susan Berman, does not know who did, and wants to prove it.”
