The devil is in the detail… Vatican recalls commemorative coins after misspelling ‘Jesus’

Homenews

An embarrassing gaffe has forced the Vatican to recall 6000 commemorative medals after someone pointed out that Jesus was misspelled as 'Lesus'.

“You had ONE job!”… is what we imagine the proof reader in the Vatican is currently hearing at the moment. In fairness, it’s a pretty embarrassing cock-up considering the Vatican wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for Jesus... or 'Lesus', as the case may be. Le medaglia commemorativa del primo anno di pontificato di papa Francesco The Italian State Mint produced the coins that had the Pope’s official motto inscribed around the side, which translated reads: ‘Jesus therefore sees the tax collector, and since he sees by having mercy and by choosing, he says to him, follow me.’ According to The Independent, four of the 6000 Lesus medallions were sold before the error was pointed out, so the misprinted coins will probably be worth a fortune in a few years.
