For all of you sound men out there…

Ballyshannon in Donegal is famous for its ‘Sound Man of the Year’ awards and now they are calling on all the other towns in the country to run a similar awards ceremony.

JOE had a chat with spokesman for the SMOTY awards Ciaran McLoone who said that the awards are “about community, friendship and Pride of Place.

“Ballyshannon is a town which suffered very badly from the recession and is very much still in decline but we want to champion all that is great about the town and the people doing great work in the town.”

As well as having quarterly outings to Dublin and having a chapter in London, founders of the SMOTY wants the rest of the country to follow suit with the unique awards.

“We want other towns and villages around Ireland to do the same thing. Each have their own awards, its gives them the opportunity to bring friends together, give a great reason for people to stay connected throughout the year.”

In order to win at the 8th annual SMOTY awards in Ballyshannon on December 27, you must be a male from Ballyshannon who is currently single. You need to be sound, aged 21 or over and you need to be born after 1984 because apparently aul’ lads are too old to be sound.

Do you think these awards will spread around the country over the next few years?

If you want to know more about their awards you can visit their Facebook page or watch the pretty cool video below…
