So much for buying our votes, eh?
Following on from yesterday’s budget, the government has voted against a proposal for a new public holiday on April 24 to commemorate the Easter Rising.
The proposal was officially rejected today, 82 votes to 37.
Sinn Féin had proposed the day as a mark of respect to ‘the contribution made to the Irish nation by those who, during the centuries of occupation of Ireland by a foreign power, gave their lives and liberty to pursue the freedom of the Irish nation.’

However, the holiday would have fallen close to Easter by its very nature, and not too long after the St. Patrick’s Day Bank Holiday.
And while that may be a sensible reason for not introducing a new public holiday, we’re still pretty damn disappointed that we’re not getting a day off
