There’ll be a Black Lives Matter solidarity demonstration in Dublin next week

The Black Lives Matter movement has emerged in America as a response to the treatment of black people at the hands of law enforcement.

In the past two years, there have been many international stories concerning the deaths of black people as a result of contact with police officers, often over minor offences or no offences at all.

The most recent instalments in this tragic situation are the deaths of Philando Castile, 32, who was shot dead in Minnesota after being pulled over for a broken taillight and Alton Sterling, 37, who was shot dead while pinned down by two police officers.

Both men were fathers.

Anti-Racism Network Ireland and Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland are teaming up and organising the demonstration “to stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement opposing racialised violence and discrimination against Black people.”

The demonstration will congregate beneath the Spire on O’Connell St on Tuesday, and will last from 6.30pm to 7.30pm according to the Facebook event page.
