Theresa May Dublin

Only one item on the agenda…

A spokesperson for An Taoiseach has confirmed that UK Prime Minister Theresa May will visit Dublin to meet with Leo Varadkar on Wednesday.

May will travel to Dublin after meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Tuesday – a trip that wasn’t without its difficulties – as she seeks to renegotiate the withdrawal agreement for Britain’s exit from the EU, particularly the issue of the Irish backstop.

May embarked on her European tour after it became clear her initial proposals were about to meet with a devastating defeat in the House of Commons in a vote that had been scheduled to take place in the House of Commons on Tuesday.

Since then, Leo Varadkar and a number of key European figures in the Brexit process have been clear that their position in relation to the Irish backstop will not change.

Amid speculation of the possibility of everything from a no deal Brexit to a second Brexit referendum, May is under pressure to come up with some sort of solution ahead of Britain’s scheduled exit from the European Union on 29 March 2019.
