The new cash and Leap fares for Dublin Bus and the Luas come into effect tomorrow

Are you paying less or more?

Carl Kinsella

We’d just gotten used to the old fares…

Schoolchildren will now pay 5c extra on public transport if paying by cash. On top of that, there’s a bigger blow for travellers who use the ‘three zone’ annual ticket for the Luas. They will now have to pay €60 extra for an ‘all-zone’ ticket.

These general increases are all to encourage commuters to switch over to the Leap card.

Pre-paid rambler ticket prices will also be going up by 3.7%.

The changes to cash fares on Dublin Bus are a little confusing. The 4-7 and 8-13 stage fares have been merged, meaning those who travel 4-7 stages will pay 15c more, and those who travel 8-13 stages will pay 10c less, so it’s not all bad news.

The main thing to take from all of this is that Leap Cards are now 20 percent cheaper than paying by cash on all journeys, so if you want to save yourself some money – you know what to do.
