This again… Europe puts pressure on Ireland to introduce water charges

Tony Cuddihy

Just when you thought you’d heard the last about water charges for a while.

Housing Minister Simon Coveney is coming under increasing pressure not to violate international laws as Ireland comes under increasing pressure to charge households for water use.

Coveney has, according to the Irish Daily Mail, requested “time and space” in order to find a workable funding model for Irish water.

However, EU Environment Commissioner Karmenu Vella has warned Coveney of sanctions – similar to those in 2012 when Ireland was fined €12,000 every day for failing to comply with a waste water directive.

Water charges were scrapped back in April as part of negotiations to form the current government, having caused major controversy during Fine Gael’s last spell in charge of the country.
