A new proposal could see wine costing a minimum of €10 per bottle if approved by the Oireachtas.

An upper limit cost of €1.10 per unit of alcohol is being considered, based on a report due by the Oireachtas Health Committee.

Consultant endocrinologist, Professor Donal O’Shea said the measure should be introduced for health reasons and it would have an effect on alcohol consumption.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner, Professor O’Shea said, “Ireland has taken the lead in public health measures before, smoking being the best example, and minimum unit price will affect alcohol consumption in Ireland and it will stop the really-low-rice selling that, in particular, supermarkets do.”
