This troubling information forms part of an investigation that will be broadcast on RTE’s Prime Time tonight.

In an investigation titled ‘Online and Unprotected’ the RTE Investigations Unit have discovered that photos that Irish girls have posted on social media are being duplicated by individuals who upload thousands of pictures to photo-sharing sites and, in some cases, hardcore pornography websites.

The investigation details that the majority of the photos are of girls in their early teens and that neither the girls themselves nor their parents have any idea that the pictures are being used for such purposes.

The investigation also found that many of the girls whose pictures are being uploaded are being groomed online and in order to illustrate the worrying fact, the investigations unit created a fictitious profile of a 14-year old named Amy (see below).

Within 30 days, Amy had accumulated 1,000 friends and within a week she had started to receive private messages from boys of a similar age and also adult men, many of which contained sexually explicit content.

The worrying findings of the investigation will be broadcast on Prime Time on RTE One tonight at 9.35pm.
