Thousands sign petition to save one of Dublin’s favourite hang-out spots

Carl Kinsella

Thousands have signed a petition to “save” one of Dublin’s favourite hang-out spots, the Portobello Harbour.

The petition, created by Save Portobello, notes that there are plans in the pipeline to demolish the Portobello College building and replace it with a six-storey hotel.

According to the text of the petition, these plans “threaten the neighbourhood’s already very limited public space.”

It goes on to warn that “The scale of the proposed building and it’s overbearing impact on its neighbours will over develop the site & create traffic congestion in the area and use the public plaza as its own courtyard as it plans to take over the plaza with outdoor tables & chairs, lessening the already limited area to the public.”

Currently, the location is used by many  “for markets, skateboarding, biking, ball games & all other activities that occur here on a regular basis.” It’s also a popular spot for people to relax after work on summer evenings.

As of Friday evening, the petition has accumulated 4,728 signatures — just a few hundred short of its 5,000-signature goal.

If you are interested in signing the petition, it can be found here.
