Today could be the hottest day of the year as temperatures set to hit 29 degrees

Stephen Porzio

The record was previously set yesterday when temperatures reached 27.5 degrees in Roscommon.

Today (Saturday, 17 July) could be the hottest day of the year in Ireland so far with Met Éireann forecasting temperatures of up to 29 degrees.

The weather forecaster previously confirmed that yesterday (Friday, 16 July) was officially the hottest day of 2021 in the country as temperatures soared to 27.5 degrees at Mt Dillon in Roscommon.

However, Met Éireann’s latest forecast – issued at around midday on Saturday – suggests yesterday’s record will be short-lived.

It states that today will be a mostly sunny and very warm day, though a little cloud will linger near northwestern coasts and there is a slight chance of an isolated shower in the south this evening.

The forecaster says that the highest temperatures, generally, will range from 24 to 28 degrees, “touching 29 degrees locally”.

It will be slightly cooler though where cloud lingers in the northwest and along coasts where sea breezes develop.

Carlow Weather also wrote on Twitter: “High pressure sitting right over Ireland today with not a cloud in sight and temperatures rising with up to 29c possible today.”

Sunday, meanwhile, will also be dry with good spells of sunshine for most. That said, there will be a little more cloud about than Saturday bringing the chance of a very isolated thundery shower during the evening over the southern half of the country.

Met Éireann says temperatures will range from 23 to 27 degrees generally, but that it will be cooler in the northwest and along eastern coasts with highs there of 18 to 22 degrees.

It even looks like the heat will stick around long into next week.

The forecaster’s national overlook reads: “High pressure bringing predominantly dry, very warm and mostly sunny weather for much of next week.

“Remaining very warm and humid at night also.”
