Trump’s State of the Union speech went down very well, but he dropped some bombshells

He delivered his first State of the Union on Tuesday.

The majority of Americans had a positive reaction to Donald Trump’s State of the Union, according to a snap CNN poll.

The survey found that almost 70% of viewers approved the address with 48% of them having a “very positive” reaction to his speech.

Surprisingly, despite Trump’s tendency to deviate from the teleprompter, Trump stuck to the script for the entirety of the address.

While the Republicans led rounds of enthusiastic applause at various stages during Trump’s address, it was a more sombre event for the opposition who held a stony silence for the majority of the speech apart from a polite applause when Trump took to the podium.

In big news, it was also announced that Trump had signed an executive order to reverse Barack Obama’s attempts to close the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay.

In an attempt to unite the deep divide between the  Congress and the country, Trump said: “Tonight, I call upon all of us to set aside our differences, to seek out common ground and to summon the unity we need to deliver for the people.”

He also made a rallying call to the American people declaring, “To every citizen watching at home tonight, no matter where you have been, or where you come from, this is your time.

“If you work hard, if you believe in yourself, if you believe in America, then you can dream anything, you can be anything, and together, we can achieve anything.”

While he said that he was willing to work with the Democrats to legalise immigrants illegally brought to the US as children, he warned that it would not happen if it meant American’s were adversely affected.

“My duty, and the sacred duty of every elected official in this chamber, is to defend Americans – to protect their safety, their families, their communities, and their right to the American Dream,” Mr Trump said referencing the immigration policy.

“Because Americans are dreamers too,” he said.
