Tweet of the Day: Paolo Di Canio under more pressure after thumping defeat

It is a slight understatement to suggest that the start of the season has not gone well for Sunderland and Paolo Di Canio and today’s result saw a section of his own fans turn against him.

It is a slight understatement to suggest that the start of the season has not gone well for Sunderland and Paolo Di Canio and today’s result saw a section of his own fans turn against him.

Five games, four losses and just three goals scored and that doesn’t even tell the whole story. A whole host of players have arrived, some current players have been put out – John O’Shea might be taking his time to warm to the wily Italian after harsh criticism – and one of the players he decided had no future, Stephane Sessegnon, opened the scoring today as the Baggies strolled to a three nil victory.

And to add insult to injury they finished the game with 10 men when Steven Fletcher left the field of play after all three substitutions were made.

Some of the Sunderland supporters began chanting “you’re getting sacked in the morning”, before the eccentric manager made his way down to the away support to remonstrate and suggest they keep the chin up in what was an unusual moment, even by his lofty standards.

Many believe the writing is on the wall, and this tweet probably sums up the feeling best of all.

As ever, never a dull moment with Di Canio, but things are looking bleak at the moment for all those on Wearside.
