Paul Moore

The blast killed five people earlier this morning.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has urged any Irish citizens that are travelling to Turkey to exercise extreme caution as the threat of terrorism remains “extremely high” following the recent  suicide bomb blast in Istanbul.

Local health officials have also confirmed that two Irish people are among the 36 injured following the attack that’s believed to be perpetrated by Kurdish militants.

Anyone with concerns for Irish citizens can ring 01 4082000 or contact the Irish Embassy in Ankara on 0090 312 4591000. If you happen to be in the area, then you’re instructed to follow the guidance of the local police and authorities.

In a statement, the Turkish health Minister Mehmet Müezzinoğlu said that 36 people, including 12 foreigners and a child had been wounded.

In light of the current instability in the region, the Department of Foreign Affairs has also implored Irish citizens not to travel in the border areas between Turkey and Syria, especially the provinces of Hatay, Kilis, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa and Mardin.
