Both a high school and an elementary school are affected.

Police in Southern California have surrounded Palmdale high school following a report of a man with a gun on campus.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that deputies are at Highland High School where authorities say at least one person is hurt.

According to Los Angeles County fire officials, one person has hospitalised, but details regarding injuries were not immediately available.

CBS are reporting that one person has been detained in this incident.

A second school shooting has also been reported on Friday afternoon, according to News Source LA. The schools are eight miles apart.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Enforcement Bureau has sent armoured vehicles to both schools. At time of writing, no update on victims have been reported.

Local news sources are asking residents to avoid the Palmdale vicinity as hundreds of law enforcement vehicles are heading that direction.

WCPO is reporting that at least three nearby schools are currently on lockdown as a result.

“At least three nearby schools — David G. Millen Intermediate, Cottonwood Elementary and Ocotillo Elementary — were on lockdown, employees there said.”
