Ryanair job losses

Redundancies are set to be announced at the end of August.

Ryanair has told staff that as many as 900 jobs within the company are at risk.

The airline is set to jettison the jobs in the coming weeks in a bid to tackle falling profits, the threat of a no-deal Brexit and the grounding of Boeing’s 737 Max aircraft.

In a video to staff, boss Michael O’Leary said Ryanair has an excess of 500 pilots and 400 flight attendants.

“We, over the next couple of weeks, will be doing our very best to minimise job losses, but some are unavoidable at this time,” he said.

He added that redundancies would be announced at the end of August.

The news comes just days after Ryanair posted a 21% decline in pre-tax profits to €243m in the three months to June.

The company blamed the decline on higher fuel costs, and a fare war with rival airlines which has led to a 6% fall in the price of airline tickets.

Challenging conditions in Germany as well as the uncertainty surrounding Brexit were also cited as reasons.

There’s also been delays to the company’s expansion plans caused by the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max jetliner.

Ryanair had ordered 58 of these aircraft for its summer 2020 schedule, but the aircraft have been grounded following two fatal crashes in five months that killed 346 people
