UTV have confirmed that they will be opening a new television station based in Dublin

We’re already familiar with the works of UTV, or ITV in old money, but it seems that they want people in the Republic to get a bit more up close and personal with them and are launching a Dublin-based station dedicated to broadcasting in the Republic.

The new station will create around 100 jobs at its Dublin-based headquarters, but it will also have news gathering and reporting presence in Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford. John McCann, chief executive of UTV Media PLC said the company already employs around 300 people here in the Republic between its various businesses and radio stations, and that the move showed great confidence in Irish broadcasting and the economy.

The application to the broadcasting authority will be submitted today, with the TV station planning to be on air in early 2015. The station will do one hour nightly news and current affairs program, as well as getting the exclusive rights to broadcast soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale here in Ireland.

You can keep up with all the latest from UTV Ireland on their Twitter page, with more news expected at a press conference which will be held later today.
