VIDEO: CNN journalist begins to cry on air while reporting on Syrian 5-year-old

Tony Cuddihy

“This is Omran. He’s alive. We wanted you to know.”

CNN news presenter Kate Bolduan struggled to maintain her composure on air as she reported about an air strike in Aleppo, Syria, earlier this week.

Bolduan somehow made it through the broadcast while footage of five-year-old Omran being carried from the rubble of his home played to millions of viewers in the United States.

Her words reflect the overwhelming uselessness many of us feel when we see these images, when we hear about the 4,500 children who have been killed in Aleppo alone since the start of hostilities in 2011.

“What strikes me is that we shed tears, but there are no tears here,” she says.

“He doesn’t cry once. That little boy is in total shock, he’s stunned, inside his home one moment and in the next he’s lost in the flurry and fury of war and chaos.”
