Video: Does Enda Kenny really think that the minimum wage in Ireland is €35,000 a year?

We don’t know what country the Taoiseach thinks he’s living in but it’s certainly not Ireland.

We don’t know what country the Taoiseach thinks he’s living in but it’s certainly not Ireland.

Enda Kenny appeared on Nine News on RTE last night to discuss the implications of the water charges debate that took place in the Dáil yesterday and what sort of hole the charges will burn in all of our pockets over the coming years.

During conversation with Eileen Dunne about the effect it will have on the average worker, Enda dropped in a line saying that “the average worker, a single worker on the minimum wage of 35,000 is going to get back €400 in the income tax returns starting in January”.

Now, as far as we were aware, the minimum wage for an average worker in Ireland (an average working week of 39 hours a week, 52 weeks a year) is a little over €17,500 (€17,542), which is just over half of the mythical figure that the Taoiseach appeared to grab from thin air last night.

He doesn’t really help himself sometimes, does he?
