Video: GoPro camera captures terrifying shark encounter in Sydney Harbour

The real question is whether this video is genuinely real or just another fake?

The real question is whether this video is genuinely real or just another fake?

If there’s anything we’ve learned from posting viral videos here on JOE, it’s that if something looks too good to be true then it probably is. So you’ll have to excuse us for taking a massive pinch of salt with this one.

The video supposedly shows the moment when Sydney resident Terry Tufferson jumped from a small cliff into the waters of Sydney Harbour, only to come face to face with a great white shark.

We will say that the video looks great, obviously a lot of work went into the editing/CGI process (if it is a fake, that is) but there are one or two red flags that have popped up that are making us question the video.

Firstly, the timing is a little too perfect. What are the chances of jumping into the water just as the shark swims past? Secondly, the friend on the top of the cliff shouts ‘SHARK!!!’ while pointing straight from the shore out, even though the shark can be seen swimming parallel to it from the righthand side. Finally, as the guys from Gizmodo Australia point out, “Sydney Harbour doesn’t get a lot of sharks, let alone white pointers.”

So, what do you think? Is it real? Or is it just another extremely well made fake? Either way, JOE is off to get a bigger boat just to be safe.
