Did we mention he was clad head to toe in tennis gear as well? That’s some story to tell the grandkids.

Did we mention he was clad head to toe in tennis gear as well? That’s some story to tell the grandkids.

Irish college students who go to America for the summer on a J1 come back with plenty of stories to tell, but few will be able to top the exploits of Matthew Costigan, who had one hell of a night when taking in Manchester United’s 7-0 win over LA Galaxy in the Rose Bowl last week.

Costigan, who is one of a group of 13 lads living in a frat house in Westwood in the city, ran onto the pitch at the end of the game, gave the match ball a good kick, shook the hand of United youngster Reece James (who scored two goals on the night) and was then unceremoniously dumped on his arse by a couple of stewards determined to spoil his fun.

Matthew’s brief on-pitch excursion was captured by three different camera angles (one at the top of the page, two below), each of which gives a different view of him getting smashed in the tackle by the stewards, but although he’ll probably never be welcome back in the Rose Bowl again, it’s a story he’ll be able to tell for years to come. Might take a bit of explaining to his parents when he arrives home, mind.

Hat-tip to Neil Holland for sending this one our way
