Video: Look at the effect that the floods had in Ballyvaughan in Clare yesterday

JOE

We knew the rain was bad in some parts of the country yesterday but we didn’t think it was this bad. Yikes.

It seems that the west of Ireland bore the brunt of the worst of the weather yesterday; you may have come across the ominous storm clouds and spectacular flashes of lightning from Galway we featured on the site yesterday and it wasn’t much better a little further south.

The video above was posted on YouTube yesterday by Ballyvaughan native Sinead Keane, who told the Irish Independent that she got caught up in the floods while driving up the road to her home after returning from a shopping trip in Galway yesterday, floods which came about after just two hours of sustained rainfall in the area.

Sinead told the Irish Independent that she could see parts of the road falling away in front of her and that her parents, who have lived in the area all their lives, said they had never seen a flood like it. While access to their home initially proved impossible, they were eventually rescued and brought to the house in a tractor.

You can read a more detailed account of Sinead’s experiences on the Irish Independent website here and while the weather might not be as extreme for the rest of the week, the forecast for the next few days and the weekend does not look particularly good, with scattered showers expected pretty much nationwide from now until Sunday.

Dang.
