We have our suspicions about other public figures who might have been members of the IRA in the past, but we would never have thought it of the future king of England.
After all the goodwill that’s been exchanged between Ireland and our neighbours to the east following Michael D’s state visit this week, the last thing we need to spoil it is a startling revelation about the IRA past of a man who will eventually become the King of England in the future.
That’s what BBC Breakfast presenter Charlie Stayt appeared to let slip when reporting on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s visit to Australia and New Zealand yesterday morning when discussing Prince William’s enduring passion for flying despite leaving the IRA recently.
Stayt quickly corrected his mistake to clarify that he had, of course, intended to say the RAF rather than the IRA, or at least that’s the impression he wanted to create, perhaps having realised he had just let slip what would be one of the biggest secrets in the history of both countries.
No, seriously, it was just an innocent mistake.
