Refugees desperately trying to flee

This video allegedly shows a group of migrants climbing onto a small dinghy in the hope of making their way from the Turkish seaside town of Bodrum to Kos in Greece.

This is seen as a possible way of entering the European Union by many desperate refugees.

This was posted on Facebook earlier today, just days after the body of young Syrian boy Aylan Kurdi washed up on a nearby beach. It is now being shared widely by locals on social media.

Aktarlar Bodrum

Akyarlar is a beautiful bay popular with tourists throughout the year. Gillian and Darren Lynch, from Templeogue in Dublin have been living in the area for 16 years.

Darren shared this insight of what it is currently like in the area.

He said: “I was in Bodrum market and normally there would be stalls and shops set up. (This) was replaced with families lying on cardboard. My mam has seen them leaving the hotel in the early hours with their life jackets on ready to go to get the boat.”

“They are basically arriving and either homeless or staying in these small hotels until it’s their time to go on the boat. They are always on their phones probably talking with family or friends either still in Syria or other parts of Turkey”

Gillian said: “That particular area in Akyarlar is a beautiful bay, popular with tourists. You can see Kos from the bay. Like we are now sitting on Bitez beach and it’s full of tourists, we can see the mountains where that beach is from here. So it’s so sad to know that this is happening just a couple kilometres from us.”

She added: “The poorer Syrians are sitting around Bodrum centre and the Syrians who obviously had some money are paying an organization I think to find them accommodation until they are transported by taxi to the boats. Locals are doing their best to help, setting up care package and giving what they can. ”

A petition calling on the Irish government to welcome thousands of refugees has already been signed by thousands of people.
