The Ecce Homo that was ‘restored’ by parishioner Cecilia Gimenez almost a year ago has raked in more than €50,000 in cash from curious tourists.

It was almost exactly 12-months ago when we first brought you the news of a hilariously botched restoration of the 19th Century ‘Ecce Homo’ or ‘Behold the Man’ pictured above.

Since then, the painting, which has been nicknamed the ‘Monkey Christ’, has brought in more than 40,000 visitors and over €50,000 in entrance fees for the Santuario de Misericodia church in Borja, near Zaragoza in north eastern Spain.

According to BBC news, Cecilia is now going to sign a deal with the local council to share in the profits from merchandise featuring the botched fresco.

Local officials now say, “it’s not possible to restore the painting to its original look”, or in other words, “we’re not arsed and it’s making more money now than ever before”.
