The damaged cruise ship, which has lain stranded on the Italian coast for 18 months, was righted this morning in an amazing feat of engineering.

When the Costa Concordia ran aground on the Italian island of Giglio in January 2012, the incident caused the death of 32 of the people on board. Thirty of those people’s bodies were found but two remain missing, presumed trapped somewhere in the massive 114,500-ton ship.

It is now hoped that the 19-hour salvage operation that was conducted yesterday and last night to right the ship will mean that the bodies of Indian Russel Rebello and Italian Grazia Trecarichi will now be found.

This timelapse video shows the remarkable engineering job that hauled the ship from being completely on its side to being vertical again, making it the largest salvage job in maritime history. The plan is to refloat the boat next spring or summer, as two thirds still remain underwater.
