Some transition year students from Tipperary has gone to number one on iTunes and are in the top ten in the Official Irish Charts with their efforts to get a number one song at Christmas in memory of their late teacher.

The pupils from Clonmel composed and recorded the song in four hours along with singer/songwriter Luan Parle & producer Gavin Raslton during an IMRO songwriting workshop for Big Music Week.

Their teacher, Alice Strain, tragically died in a car accident last year, and the students wanted to do something to demonstrate the huge impact which she’d had on their lives.

Speaking about the release of the single Alice’s sister Vera said “It’s just wonderful, really fantastic. Alice would have been so proud of the girls. She thought of them as her second family. She loved her job and her students and this song is the most wonderful tribute. This has given the whole family a huge lift at such a hard time. It’s brought light into our lives at a time of darkness”.

Paddy Power has tipped the song at 4/1 to reach the Christmas number 1, just behind the X Factor winner, and we know which we’d prefer. If you want to download the song, head over to the iTunes page and help them get to top spot, with all the proceeds headed to the St. Vincent de Paul this Christmas.
