Shane Grogan needs help to make his life, and that of his family, easier after an assault left him needing round the clock care. This clever fundraiser is an idea we can really get behind.

Following a serious assault in August 2012, Tuam native Shane Grogan was left with serious brain injuries, injuries that require 24-hour care. Immediately after the attack, Shane was sent to Beaumount Hospital in Dublin but after two months he was moved to hospital in Galway, where he has remained.

His parents Joe and Joan would like to have Shane home again but to do that they need to build a special unit at their house and that will require money. Lots of money. To help the Grogan family, locals in Tuam have hit on a really great way to help.

Shane’s a big Liverpool fan so with that in mind they are asking locals to swap their usual football shirts for one of their most hated rivals, for a hefty sponsorship fee of course. That means a lot of Liverpool and Manchester United fans swapping shirts for the day, and the day they have chosen in March 16, the day that United play Liverpool. Should be tasty.

The event will take place in The Brogue Bar and this video shows just some of the locals who will be taking part, men with solid bar names like ‘Burger’, and ‘Scobie’. As you will, none of them are too pleased with having to wear the wrong type of red either.

The focus is not just on soccer though. Galway footballer Jarlath Fallon will wear a Mayo jersey on the day while Leo Moran of The Saw Doctors will be slipping on a Roscommon jersey. We think it is a really great idea and perhaps the idea will catch on in more locations around Galway and beyond.
